This season I am now the oldest regular in my football team - a veteran of the game who in football parlance relies on having that extra yard of experience in my head to compensate for the loss of two yards of pace from my legs!

In this role as the old bull I've been passing on some tips and imparting some of the wisdom and 'know how' to the young bulls. Last week one of the whipper snappers was complaining that his boots were still caked in mud from the week before. I explained to him that if you use your dirty sock at the end of the game you can give your boots a quick polish so that they are fresh for the following week.......the first yard is always in your head!
